Characteristics

Shrubs or trees with simple and stellate hairs. Leaves ± persistent, alternate, entire to serrate, petiolate, fugaciously stipulate. Flowers dioecious, the ♂ ones in axillary cyme-like short racemes, the ♀ usually solitary in the axils of the upper leaves. Sepals 5, almost free, ± valvate in bud. Petals 5, free, with a rather fleshy scale adnate to the base inside. Male flowers: stamens 8–12; filaments shorter than the anthers, the latter basifixed, the 2 thecae opening with terminal pores or slits. Rudiment of ovary 0. Female flowers: sepals and petals similar to those of the ♂ flowers. Ovary sessile, 1-locular, with 2–5 multi-ovulate placentas; styles 2–5, free or connate at base, short; stigmas obtuse. Fruit leathery to almost woody, dehiscing with 2–5 valves. Seeds 8–10, in a fleshy pulp, the testa surrounded by a viscid ± fleshy aril.
