Characteristics

Large glabrous evergreen tree 12-45 m. tall.. With a straight bole up to 1 m. diameter at base, often heavily armed with blunt spines to 2.5 cm. long and with prominent sharp spreading sometimes plank-like buttresses (see Z.A.E., t. 20 (1922)) 3.6-5 m. tall, continued as fluting; bark rough, grey or brown, somewhat fissured, often flaking in irregular strips; slash yellow-brown, granular, mottled; crown thick, rounded, spreading, often huge and umbrella-shaped in old trees; young twigs rather compressed.. Leaves ovate to broadly elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, (5-)7.5-28(-40) cm. long, (2-)4-8(-10) cm. wide, juvenile ones often notably large, shortly acuminate at the apex, cuneate to rounded at the base, somewhat coriaceous, glossy and glabrous, usually marked with 2 longitudinal fold-marks; lateral nerves on either side up to 35; venation very closely reticulate, prominent; petioles 2-8 mm. long; stipules reddish, linear, 5-15(-20) cm. long, pointed, glabrous, deciduous, enclosing the buds, characteristically protruding above the canopy.. Flowers small, in glabrous paniculate inflorescences (7-)12-15 cm. long; pedicels 1-3 mm. long; buds often reddish.. Sepals white, broadly obovate or almost round, 1-2.5 mm. long.. Petals 5(-6), white, pink or rose, broadly elliptic or almost round, 2.5-4 mm. long, 2-2.5 mm. wide.. Disc yellow.. Anthers magenta.. Ovary rose.. Fruits (3-)4-5 cm. long, (3-)6-8 cm. wide, firm, obscurely (4-)5-ribbed or angled, 4-5-seeded.. Pyrenes oblong, obtusely 3-angled, 3-5 cm. long, 2.5-3.2 cm. wide, 1 cm. thick with a woody wall 2.5-6 mm. thick covered with a fibrous mass. Seeds 2 cm. long, 7 mm. wide.

Environment

Found in a wide variety of habitats including river banks in savannah regions; Parinari excelsa woodland; forest associations on dry land; semi-deciduous rain-forest; margins of seasonally flooded forest at elevations of 200-1,200 metres.
