Characteristics

Succulent herb to 70 cm high; stem erect, succulent and up to 25 mm in diameter, green with 3 reddish lines below each node, the base enlarging and becoming tuberous and to 60 mm in diameter.. Leaves densely set, semi-terete with adaxial groove, to 8 cm long, 3–4 mm in diameter, green, glabrous.. Capitula solitary or up to 3, stalk of individual heads 9–42 cm long; bracts on inflorescence linear, 5–8 mm long; involucre 15–19 mm long, 15–20 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus absent; phyllaries 19–20, 15–19 mm long, 2–5 mm wide.. Florets red, the tube 15 mm long and yellow-green at base, lobes 3.5 mm long.. Achenes unknown, but ovary 3 mm long, hirsute; pappus 10–14 mm long.
