Leaves sessile, elliptic, 3–12.5 cm long, 1.2–6 cm wide, margins coarsely and irregularly sinuate-serrate or laciniate, apex obtuse to acute, minutely acuminate-apiculate; reduced bractiform leaves scale-like, reddish-brown, 1.1–2.5 x 0.5–0.7 cm wide.. Capitula discoid, 1–3, terminal; involucre 19–21 mm long, ± 15 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 3–4, lanceolate, glabrous, 3–6 mm long; phyllaries 13, glabrous, 19–21 mm long.. Ray florets absent; disc florets vivid scarlet, corolla 17–22 mm long, tube glabrous, expanded in upper half, lobes 1.8–2 mm long.. Achenes 7.5 mm long, glabrous; pappus in flower 17 mm long, in fruit 28.5 mm long.
