Leaves represented by numerous narrow spine-like straw-coloured scales 9–12 mm long.. Capitula discoid, solitary, terminal on solitary 11–15 cm long peduncles; bracts linear, narrow; involucre cylindrical, 19–21 mm long, 10–13 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus obscure or absent; phyllaries 11, 19–21 mm long.. Ray florets absent; disc florets bright red, corolla 20.5–22 mm long, tube hairy, especially in upper half, slightly expanded in upper two-thirds, lobes 2.5 mm long.. Achenes 5.5 mm long, shortly hairy, pappus 19–20 mm long.
