Characteristics

Perennial, erect, branched shrub arising from a thick, knotty rhizome. Roots fibrous. Leaves alternate, petiolate, multinerved; venation reticulate. Inflorescence a pedunculate racemose umbel, terminal or in upper leaf axils, ebracteate. Flowers bisexual. Perianth actinomorphic, the segments conduplicate in bud; nectaries present at base. Sepals and petals equal, free, pale pink. Stamens 6, free; filaments expanded at base; anthers introrse, basifixed, dehiscing by slits. Ovary superior, subglobose, 3-locular; ovules numerous, in 2 rows per locule; style 1, with 3 reflexed stigmatic branches. Fruit a loculicidal, 3-valved capsule. Seeds many, globose to angled, strophiolate.
