Solitary or clustering, moderate palms. Stem slender, with conspicuous nodes. Leaves paripinnate, marcescent; leaf sheath clasping, splitting opposite petiole, not forming a crownshaft. Pinnae reduplicate, linear-acute, green on both surfaces; midrib prominent. Inflorescence interfoliar, spicate; peduncle elongate, erect, fully enclosed within prophyll and peduncular bract; prophyll winged; peduncular bract tubular, attached midway between prophyll attachment and most proximal flowers, enclosing the inflorescence in bud, deciduous or persistent; rachilla longer than or c. same length as peduncle. Flowers spirally arranged in pits; triads in proximal portion, staminate flowers in distal portion. Staminate flower symmetric in bud; stamens 9–12; filaments short; anthers basifixed; pistillode small. Pistillate flower globular. Fruit ellipsoid, red; stigmatic remains apical; mesocarp fleshy, thin, with longitudinal fibres toward endocarp; endocarp thin. Seed laterally attached; hilum short; raphe attached for length of seed; endosperm ruminate; embryo basal. Eophyll bifid.
