Leaf 1(-2), narrowly to broadly lanceolate, 70-300x 10-35 mm, spreading to erect, canaliculate, light green or glaucous; margins entire to undulate and/or crisped, green or maroon, leathery; leaf bases clasping, 10-40 mm long, plain to faintly spotted or heavily banded with maroon; primary seedling leaf flat, prostrate. Inflorescence spicate, rarely racemose, many-flowered, dense, sterile apex long; scape erect, 40-130 mm long, slender to sturdy, light green, lower half plain or irregularly spotted or blotched, upper half shading to dull maroon, frequently strongly inflated; rachis light to dark brownish-maroon or brownish-green below, shading to light blue, mauve, intense electric blue or yellow above; pedicels usually absent, rarely 4-5 mm long; lower bracts ovate, becoming lanceolate above, 0.5-5.0 x 1.0-1.5 mm, white to light mauve. Perianth zygomorphic, urceolate, spreading to cernuous, tube cup-shaped, 1-3 mm long, light blue; outer tepals ovate, 5-8 x 4-5 mm, yellowish-green, greenish-brown, light to bright yellow or light to deep mauve, apical gibbosities prominent, light to dark brown, maroonish-brown, purplish-maroon or dark yellow; inner tepals obovate, 7-9 x 3-6 mm, yellowish-green, translucent white or light to bright yellow, upper two tepals overlapping, lower inner tepal narrower, canaliculate and longer, apices slightly recurved, apical marking purplish-brown, reddish-brown or deep yellow, keels light to dark brown, green or yellow. Stamens declinate, included, rarely exserted up to 2mm; filaments white, 6-9 mm long, rarely11-13 mm long. Ovary ellipsoid, 3-4 x2-3 mm, dark green; style included, rarely exserted, declinate, 5-7 mm long, rarely 11 mm long, white. Capsule ellipsoid, 6 x 4 mm. Seed globose, 1.2-1.4 x 1.3-1.4 mm, glossy, black; strophiole inflated, 0.6-0.7 mm long, smooth.

Scape plain but pale to bright electric blue and usually inflated above. Flowers urceolate, spreading to nodding, mostly sessile but apical flowers on short blue pedicels and usually sterile, tepals pale blue and white, with greenish yellow tips and brown apical swellings and keels, stamens usually included, rarely exserted.
