Flowers bisexual, erect or pendulous, usually zygomorphic, the uppermost vestigial. Perianth segments 6, fused into a tube, the lobes cohering or spreading, persistent; inner segments equal to or longer than outer. Stamens 6, adnate to perianth, included or exserted; filaments filiform; anthers versatile, dorsifixed, dehiscing by slits, introrse. Ovary superior, trilocular; ovules numerous per locule; placentation axile; style long or short; stigma slightly capitate. Fruit a loculicidal capsule. Seeds numerous, globose, black, arillate.
