Characteristics

Dwarf geophyte, 20-160 mm high. Bulb subglobose, 10-15 mm in diameter, offset forming; tunic multilayered, outer layers dark brown, spongy; inner cataphyll translucent white, upper half heavily tinged with brownish-magenta, adhering to leaf bases, apex obtuse or acute. Leaves 1-2, lanceolate, 50-180 x 10-25 mm, suberect to spreading or reflexed, yellowish-green to glaucous, deeply canaliculate, upper surface plain to heavily spotted with light to dark brown; leaf margins entire or slightly to heavily undulate; leaf bases clasping, 10-45 mm long, lower portion white, upper portion light yellowish-green, occasionally maroon-spotted; primary seedling leaf terete, erect. Inflorescence racemose, 1-many-flowered, sterile apex short; scape erect, 10-40 mm long, yellowish-green, hidden between leaf bases; rachis yellowish-green, flexuose; pedicels suberect to erect, 1-2 mm long, yellowish-white; lower bracts ovate, becoming lanceolate above, 3-5 x 2-4 mm, white. Perianth zygomorphic, tubular, suberect, straight to distinctly curved above, bright yellow to greenish-yellow, maturing to dull red; tube cylindrical, 7-10 mm long, base strongly oblique, ventricose; outer tepals oblong, 7-9 x 4-6 mm, apical gibbosities green; inner tepals narrowly obovate, 12-15 x 3-5 mm, all overlapping, narrowed towards mouth, keels light green, lower inner tepal 2-3 mm shorter than upper inner tepals. Stamens included, straight; filaments white, 8-11 mm long. Ovary ellipsoid, 4-5 x 3-4 mm, light green, lower half with minute blue speckles; style included, straight, 13-15 mm long, white. Capsule ellipsoid, 12-15 x 4-5 mm. Seed globose, 0.9-1.1 x 1.0-1.1 mm, glossy, black; strophiole inflated, 0.6-0.7 mm long, smooth.

Leaves 2, mostly flat, to 35 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, glabrous, all green. Raceme to 15 cm long; rachis flexuose; pedicels c. 2 mm long. Flowers erect to spreading, tubular but swollen in the middle, zygomorphic; lower flowers sheathed in leaf bases. Perianth c. 2.5 cm long, yellow-green; inner segments 3-4 mm longer than the outer which have one segment almost equal to inner and pouched at tip. Stamens included. Style ultimately exserted.
