Characteristics

Dwarf geophyte, 10-20 mm high. Bulb globose, 7-15 mm in diameter, solitary; tunic multilayered, outer layers dark brown; inner cataphyll translucent white, adhering to leaf bases, apex acute. Leaves 3-8(-12), narrowly to broadly lanceolate, 20-55 x 5-20 mm, prostrate, rosulate, light to dark green or glaucous, upper surface with small to large, light to dark brown blotches, lower surface plain or centrally tinged with dull purple; leaf margins thickened, dull maroon or yellow; leaf bases clasping, 15-25 mm long, subterranean; primary seedling leaf flat, prostrate. Inflorescence a subcapitate raceme, few-to many-flowered, produced at ground level, sterile apex short; scape erect, 10-25 mm long, subterranean, white, terete, lengthening in fruit; rachis white to green; pedicels erect to suberect, 1-3 mm long, white; lower bracts ovate, becoming lanceolate above, 1-4 x 1 mm, translucent white. Perianth zygomorphic, tubular, erect, white to cream, heavily yeast-scented; tube shallowly cup-shaped, 1-2 mm long; outer tepals oblong, 5-7 x 0.8-1.0 mm, plain or suffused with dull green or red; inner tepals narrowly oblong obovate, 10-13 x 1-2 mm, plain or suffused with dull green or red. Stamens well exserted, straight; filaments white, 11-17 mm long. Ovary ellipsoid, 2 x 1 mm, light yellowish-green; style well exserted, white, straight, erect, 8-17 mm long. Capsule ellipsoid, 6-7 x 4-6 mm. Seed globose, 1.1-1.2 x 1.3 mm, glossy, black; strophiole inflated, 0.6-0.7 mm long, smooth.
