Erect or geniculate, caespitose annual or perennial. Culms 45–70 cm high, c. 5-noded; midculm nodes hidden by leaf sheaths; mid-culm internodes glabrous or scaberulous. Leaves: basal sheaths scabrous in grooves; ligule 3–6 mm long, laciniate; blade involute (rarely flat), 8–25 cm long, 1–3.5 mm wide. Panicles open, 20–25 cm long, partially or fully exserted; peduncle retrorsely scabrous; primary branches clustered, spreading, bare at base. Spikelets few, 3–4 mm long; pedicel subclavate, scabrous; rachilla extension c. 1 mm long, long-hairy. Glumes not widely diverging, subequal. Lemma 2–2.5 mm long, glabrous or with scattered hairs in mid-back region, 5-nerved, entire or 2–4-toothed, awned; awn arising from upper 1/3 of lemma length, (1.3–) 1.5–3.5 mm long. Palea slightly shorter than lemma, shortly bifid. Stamens 3; anthers 0.4–0.7 mm long.
