Characteristics

Ascending to weakly erect, caespitose annual or short-lived perennial. Culms 40 cm tall, 3 or 4-noded; mid-culm nodes exposed, glabrous; internodes glabrous to very slightly scaberulous below nodes. Leaves: basal sheaths glabrous; ligules 2–5 mm long, acute becoming lacerate; blade flat, to 8 (–12) cm long, (1–) 2–3.5 mm wide. Panicles open, to 25 cm long, exserted; peduncle scaberulous; primary branches whorled, divaricate to spreading. Spikelets many, (1.8–) 2–2.5 mm long; pedicels scaberulous; rachilla extension plumose, 0.5–1.3 mm long including hairs. Glumes not widely diverging, subequal or lower one slightly longer. Lemma 1.4–2 mm long, ±glabrous dorsal surface but moderately hairy towards margins, 5-nerved, 4-toothed, awned; awn arising c. 75% lemma length from base, 1.2–2 mm long, filamentous. Palea c. 3/4 length of lemma, entire. Stamens 3; anthers 0.2–0.3 (–0.4) mm long.
