Characteristics

Erect, caespitose annual. Culms 40–60 cm high, 4-noded; mid-culm nodes/internodes glabrous. Leaves: basal sheaths scabrous between veins; ligule 3–7 mm long, acute to obtuse, tending to become partially laciniate with age; blade basally flat and involute above, 3–15 cm long, 1–3 mm wide. Panicles loosely contracted, 15–25 cm long, partially or sometimes fully exserted; peduncle scabrous; primary branches clustered, unequal, narrowly spreading, bare at base up to 2.5 cm. Spikelets many, 5–8 mm long; pedicel clavate, scabrous; rachilla extension c. 0.5 mm long, long-hairy. Glumes diverging, slightly unequal. Lemma c. 3 mm long, villous, 5-nerved, 4-toothed with lateral teeth c. 0.5 mm long and central teeth shorter, awned; awn arising from upper half or mid-point of lemma, 7–10 mm long, with column twisted. Palea 65% length of lemma, shortly bidentate. Stamens 3; anthers c. 0.5 mm long.
