Characteristics

More or less erect, caespitose or sometimes stoloniferous, annual or short-lived perennial. Culms to c. 50 cm high; 3 or 4-noded. Leaves: basal sheaths scaberulous to finely papillose; ligule 2.5–3 mm long, obtuse, becoming erose; blade rather lax, flat, to 15 cm long, (1–) 1.5–3.5 (–4.5) mm wide. Panicle open, to 25 cm long, with base enclosed in upper leaf sheath or exserted; peduncle retrorsely scabrid; primary branches rather stiff, spreading, lower branches reflexed at maturity. Spikelets 2.0–3.0 (–3.2) mm long; pedicel clavate, 5–40 mm long; rachilla extension a plumose bristle, (0.3–) 0.5–1.5 mm long. Glumes diverging, subequal. Lemma 1.7–2.6 mm long, glabrous, 5-nerved, minutely 4-toothed at apex, muticous or shortly awned; awn subapical, 0.2–1.5 mm long. Palea 1.6–2.1 mm long, acute. Stamens 3; anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long.
