Erect or geniculate, caespitose annual. Culms 12–45 cm tall but often less than 20 cm, c. 4-noded; mid-culm nodes exposed or hidden by leaf sheaths; mid-culm internodes glabrous or scabrous. Leaves: basal sheaths scabrous between veins or glabrous; ligule 3–6 mm long, acute, entire to slightly ragged at apex; blade folded, 2–12 cm long, very fine and longattenuate. Panicles loosely contracted or rarely open, 4–15 cm long, partially to sometimes fully exserted; peduncle smooth to scaberulous, primary branches clustered, narrowly spreading, bare at base. Spikelets few–many, 2.5–4.5 mm long; pedicel clavate, scabrous; rachilla extension minute, glabrous. Glumes diverging, subequal. Lemma 1.5–2 mm long, villous, 5-nerved, 4-toothed, awned; awn arising from or above mid-point of lemma, 4–6 mm long, with column more than 0.5 mm wide and twisted. Palea subequal to lemma, shortly bifid. Stamens 3; anthers 0.3–0.5 mm long.
