Annual or perennial herbs with resin canals; stems winged by the decurrent leaf bases. Leaves alternate, with long-decurrent base and dentate margins. Capitula disciform, terminal, few to many together in a large, loose inflorescence; phyllaries in several series, narrow, often rigid with the outer ones recurved; receptacle flat, epaleate. Outer florets many, female, filiform, with linear style branches; central florets hermaphrodite, with 5 lobes; anthers at the base obtuse or subacute but without tails, and with an apical appendage; style branches linear and papillose. Achenes cylindrical, pubescent; pappus of free, barbellate bristles.
