Characteristics

Culms 3–40 cm high; mid-culm nodes pallid to purple-black. Leaves: sheath of flag leaf often inflated; ligule 4.3–10.2 mm long, acute; blade 2.5–11 cm long, 2.6–7.5 mm wide. Inflorescences 1.5–5 cm long; spikelet fascicle with long hairs at base; hairs to 1 mm long, straight, antrorse, white. Sterile spikelets 6–9 mm long, of 2 glumes and 5–11 lemmas, much longer than bisexual spikelet and concealing it except for awns. Bisexual spikelets 2.5–4.3 mm long; rachilla conspicuously elongated between upper glume and first floret and elongated between florets; lower glume 2.5–4.3 mm long; upper glume 2.6–4.3 mm long; basal lemma 2–3 mm long, entire or bidentate, with subapical awn 4.7–7.2 mm long. Anthers 0.5–0.8 mm long.

Bisexual/fertile spikelet to 2 mm long, 1-2-flowered; pedicel 2-3 mm long, villous; lemma awned from below apex, awn up to 2 x length of body; anther 0.5-0.6 mm long. Sterile spikelet 6-9 mm long, awnless, consisting of two glumes and numerous imbricate, obtuse, empty lemmas.
