Leaves (3)5–11-foliolate; petiole and rhachis 3–18 cm. long, dorsally convex, flattened and canaliculate on the upper surface, glabrous; leaflets light green turning reddish-brown on both surfaces when dried but somewhat darker (sometimes nearly black) above, 3–8 × 1·5–4 cm., narrowly to broadly elliptic, rounded or obtuse or with a short acumen at the apex, cuneate or somewhat rounded at the base, subcoriaceous, glabrous or with scattered persistent short-armed stellate hairs on both surfaces; terminal leaflet asymmetric with petiolule 1–5 cm. long, the lateral ones symmetric or somewhat asymmetric at the base, subsessile or with a petiolule up to 4 mm. long; midrib raised on both surfaces, lateral nerves slightly to rather raised above, less so beneath, venation not raised but sometimes visible beneath.
A small shrub. It loses its leaves during the year. It grows 5-40 cm tall and is spreading. It has underground stems. The leaves have 5-11 leaflets. The leaflets are 3-8 cm long by 2-4 cm wide. The fruit are oval and red to black. They are 12 mm long by 9 mm wide.
Inflorescence 1·5–3 cm. long, spike-like, dense, glabrous or with very sparse minute glands; pedicels 1–2 mm. long.
A suffrutex with brownish glabrous striate stems, 5–30 cm. long, spreading from horizontal trailing woody roots.
Drupe at first red, turning black, 9–12 × 6–9 × 5–6 mm., ovoid-oblong, compressed.
Petals yellow, 2·5–3 × 1·5 mm., obovate-elliptic.
Calyx-segments c. 1 mm. long, ovate.
