Shrub 0.9–1.8 m. tall, with 1-several stems from one root; young shoots with rather sparse brownish ± adpressed hairs, later glabrous.. Leaf-blades narrowly elliptic or elliptic-lanceolate, 8.5–23 cm. long, 1.8–6.1 cm. wide, shortly acuminate at the apex, narrowly cuneate at the base, not coriaceous, glabrous above save for yellowish or brownish hairs on the midrib, pubescent on the venation beneath particularly when young but soon glabrescent; lateral nerves 14–32 on each side; petiole 0.5–3.5 cm. long; stipules ovate-triangular, 5–8(–10) mm. long, 4–5.5 mm. wide, acute, hairy inside and out, the marginal hairs often giving a fimbriate appearance.. Flowers bibracteate, 3–5 in sessile axillary glomerules; bracts small, triangular, acute, hairy.. Calyx-tube campanulate, 1.5–2.5 mm. long; lobes 3–5, narrowly ovate-triangular, ovate-oblong or elliptic, 2–3 mm. long, 1.5–1.6 mm. wide, acute, pubescent, spreading.. Corolla whitish or usually pink; tube cylindrical, 2.5–3.2 mm. long, glabrous outside or hairy at apex, the throat densely hairy inside; lobes 4–5(?–6), triangular, 2 mm. long, 1.4 mm. wide, hairy inside particularly at the base.. Stamens 5–6, inserted in the throat, the filaments very short; anthers included.. Ovary ± 10-locular; disc depressed, fleshy; style 3.5–4.5 mm. long, pilose, scarcely or just exserted; stigma-lobes 8–1045, linear, ± 1 mm. long.. Fruit waxy-white at first, becoming a bright “porcelain” blue when ripe, subglobose, 5 mm. in diameter (0.9–1 cm. when fresh), fleshy, with about 10 grooves between the slight lobes when dry but not evident in fresh state, ± glabrous, crowned with very fleshy calyx-lobes, 4 × 3 mm., slightly ciliate near inflexed tips; pyrenes pale waxy yellow, 9–10, shaped rather like orange segments but ± pyriform, 2.2 mm. long, 1.4 mm. wide, 1.1 mm. thick, pointed at the base, ± 4-ribbed on the outer curved face.
