Stems 2–8 dm, thinly appressed-hairy; lvs of basal shoots whorled or scattered, narrowly lanceolate to oblanceolate, 4–8 mm, sparsely hairy beneath on the midrib and margin; cauline lvs similar but larger, to 2 cm; panicle occupying half the plant, the primary branches diverging at 45–60°, the ultimate branches with fls in crowded or racemiform clusters; pedicels usually shorter than the cal; outer sep short; fr subglobose or broadly ellipsoid, often distinctly surpassing the obovoid, basally acute cal; seeds 1–3(4) flattened-ovoid, smooth, dark brown. Dry soil; Mass. to s. Ont. and nw. Ind., s. to Del., n. Va., and O., and along the coastal plain to Fla. and La. (L. leggettii)
