Leptaspis banksii R.Br.

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Leptaspis

Characteristics

Culms 30–100 cm high. Leaves: ligule 0.4–0.5 mm long; pseudopetiole 10–50 mm long, ± folded, hairy adaxially and sometimes also, but less so, on outer surface; blade lamina narrowly elliptic to slightly lanceolate or oblanceolate, (7–) 9.5–39 cm long, 9–40 mm wide, finely hairy along nerves adaxially (but apparently mostly abaxial from twisting of pseudopetiole), scabrous on margins. Panicles (10–) 13–30 (–40) cm long, primary branches solitary, erect to spreading, mostly 1–6 cm long, with short uncinate hairs on all axes. Male spikelets: glumes ± equal or sometimes unequal in length, broadly ovate to triangular, 1–1.8 mm long, cuspidate with mucro to 0.5 mm long, 1–3-nerved, sparsely hairy; lemma broad, with uncinate hairs and recurved mucro; anthers 1.3–1.5 (–2 5) mm long. Female spikelets to 5.5 mm long; glumes (1–) 1.5–2.4 mm long, with sparse uncinate hairs; lower glume 1–3-nerved; upper glume (1–) 3-nerved; lemma (3–) 4–5.5 mm long, muticous, strongly 7-nerved with nerves forming pronounced ridges connected by transverse nervelets on outside of utricle, puberulous with uncinate hairs. Staminodes 6, minute, at base of ovary.
More
Perennial, caespitose from short rhizome. Culms erect, 40–60 cm tall. Leaf sheaths clustered at base, longer than internodes, strongly ribbed, laterally compressed, pubescent along keel upward; leaf blades lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, 15–30 × 1.5–3.5 cm, abaxial (upper) surface glabrous, adaxial (lower) surface pubescent, base attenuate into a 1–3 cm pseudopetiole, apex acute; ligule 0.3–0.5 mm. Panicle very narrow, 15–35 cm, densely hairy with short hooked hairs; branches inserted singly, erect or ascending, lowest 2–7 cm. Female spikelet: glumes subequal, broadly ovate, 1.5–2.3 mm, cuspidate; mature lemma globose, 3.5–5 mm, pink or purplish, asymmetrical, densely pubescent, hairs weakly hooked, 7-ribbed, ribs white or green; palea ca. 1/2 lemma length, base flat, upper part sulcate, apex 2-lobed. Male spikelet: lemma ovate, 2–3 mm, pubescent along veins; anthers 1.8–2.5 mm.
