Characteristics

Small trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, entire, coriaceous, penninerved; secondary veins arcuate, anastomosing Inflorescence axillary or subaxillary or leaf-opposed. Flowers solitary or in subumbellate cymes, shortly pedicellate, hermaphrodite, regular. Sepals 5, united at base, slightly imbricate. Petals 5, united almost to their apex to form a narrow tube; free portions valvate and reflexed. Stamens 5, alternating with the petals; filaments adnate to the petal for most of their length; anthers oblong-ovate. Disk absent. Ovary unilocular; style filiform, slightly eccentric; stigma small; ovules 2, pendulous. Fruit a drupe, oblong-ellipsoid; endocarp woody; seed large.
