Genus

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae

Characteristics

Annual. Leaf-blades broad and flat; ligule very short, membranous, minutely ciliate. Inflorescence dense and spike-like, composed of numerous crowded slender racemes. Spikelets laterally compressed, imbricate, subsessile or shortly pedicelled, appressed to the very slender rhachis of the secund spike-like racemes, disarticulating between the florets; glumes persistent, unequal, keeled, 1-nerved; lemmas exserted from the glumes, membranous, narrow in profile, keeled, awned from the entire or minutely toothed tip, lateral nerves silky-ciliate, lowest lemma occasionally glabrous or with only a few hairs; palea shorter than the lemma. Caryopsis linear, obtusely trigonous in cross-section.
