Characteristics

Deciduous terrestrial tuberous orchids growing in clonal colonies. Leaf single, ground-hugging, smooth, sparsely glandular-hairy; sterile plants with small accessory bract nestled in cordate leaf base. Racemes 1-flowered; peduncle thin, sparsely glandular hairy. Flowers resupinate, unusual shape, dull-coloured (mainly red and white), dominated by lateral sepals and petals. Dorsal sepal free, shorter than lateral sepals, incurved and strongly hooding column. Lateral sepals free, projecting forwards or decurved beneath labellum. Petals free, erect, thin, club-shaped, densely glandular. Labellum attached by its base to column base, remaining flexible. Labellum lamina obscurely 3-lobed; lateral lobes erect, incurved, forming tube around column; midlobe short, decurved. Calli in 2 or 4 rows, stalked, papillate; basal calli similar. Column narrow, incurved. Anther with 4 yellow pollinia, no viscidium.
