Leaf usually prostrate, 40–90 × 15–30 mm, bright green, glabrous or nearly so, a small accessory bract present in the leaf base of sterile plants. Flower stem 80–250 mm tall, wiry, glabrous, 1–3-flowered. Flowers 15–20 × 10–15 mm, of unusual shape, pink to red and white, labellum white with red bars, calli yellow, column green with red bars. Dorsal sepal 8–10 × 4 mm, incurved. Lateral sepals asymmetrical, 8–10 × 4 mm, spreading horizontally or at a slight angle below labellum. Petals narrow, club-shaped, held erect like ears, 15–18 × 2mm, densely glandular, purplish red. Labellum 5.5–7 × 5.5–7mm, obscurely 3-lobed; lateral lobes entire, erect; midlobe entire, recurved. Calli stalked, yellow, in 2–4 rows to base of midlobe. Column 6.5–7.5 × 2.5–3 mm, greenish with red bars.
Widespread and common, ranging from coast to inland areas growing in heathland, heathy forest, mallee vegetation, granite outcrops and scrub adjacent to swamps, usually in light freely draining sandy soils; in W.A. often occurs in winter-wet sites.
