Characteristics

Annual. Culms tufted, slender, ascending, 30–80 cm tall. Leaf sheaths papillate-pilose with spreading hairs; leaf blades thin, flat, 4–18 × 0.3–0.6 cm, glabrous or pilose, attenuate; ligule membranous, 1–2 mm, usually lacerate. Inflorescence 10–30(–50) cm, brushlike; racemes 5–35, unilateral, 2–11 cm, very slender, straight, ascending, rachis scabrid, spikelets imbricate. Spikelets glaucous-green or purplish green, elliptic, lightly laterally compressed, 1.4–2 mm, florets 2–4; glumes scabrid along keel; lower glume lanceolate, 0.7–1.5 mm, apex acuminate; upper glume narrowly oblong, 0.9–1.6 mm, cuspidate or obtuse and mucronate; lemmas elliptic-oblong, keeled, lowest 0.8–1.3 mm, veins puberulous, usually also a few appressed hairs between veins, obtuse; palea keels scaberulous. Anthers ca. 0.2 mm. Caryopsis broadly elliptic, 0.7–0.8 mm, obtusely trigonous, apex obtuse. Fl. and fr. Jul–Oct.

Spikelets 2–5(usually 3)-flowered, narrowly elliptic, 1.9–2.5 mm. long, overlapping; glumes subequal, shorter than the lemmas, lower glume lanceolate, 0.7–1.5 mm. long, acute, upper glume narrowly oblong, 0.9–1.6 mm. long, obtuse and mucronate; lemmas elliptic-oblong, 0.8–1.2 mm. long, minutely hairy on the back, bluntly 2-toothed.. Caryopsis broadly elliptic, 0.5 mm. long, brown, obtusely trigonous in cross-section.. Fig. 76, p. 280.
Tufted annual 320-1200 mm high; erect to geniculate; leaves cauline. Leaf blade to 250 x about 7 mm, linear; sheaths and blades with bulbous based hairs; ligule an unfringed membrane, 0.5-3.2 mm long. Inflorescence 200-300 mm long. Spikelet 1.9-2.5 mm long, (2-)3(-5)-flowered; glumes unequal; upper glume mucronate or minutely awned; lemma laterally compressed, keeled, minutely hairy on back, hairs scattered or in vertical rows, apex bifid; anthers 0.2-0.3 mm long, yellow; caryopsis 0.4-0.6 mm long, broadly elliptic.
Spikelets laterally compressed, 2–4-flowered, 1.8–2.3(2.5) mm long, narrowly elliptic, overlapping; glumes unequal, the inferior 0.9–1.2(1.6) mm long, lanceolate, acute, the superior 1–1.7 mm long, narrowly oblong, obtuse and mucronate; lemmas 0.9–1.2 mm long, elliptic-oblong, keeled, minutely pilose on the back, bluntly 2-toothed at the apex.
Slender annual up to 100 cm tall, erect or geniculately ascending; ligule a short membrane; leaf lamina 4–24 cm × 1–8 mm, linear, flat, long-attenuate at the apex; sheaths and both surfaces of the lamina tuberculate-pilose, the hairs spreading.
