Characteristics

Perennials. Flowering culms 30–90 cm high. Leaves: basal sheaths glabrous, or sometimes pilose near base; collar usually pubescent; blade flat or convolute, 3–11 cm long, 0.5–5 mm wide, abaxially pilose or hispid or rarely glabrous. Inflorescences 4–7 cm long; rachis glabrous. Spikelets alternate, 6–7 mm long, the terminal one often longer, with 2 bisexual florets; rachilla prolongation 0.4–0.6 mm long. Upper glume lanceolate, 6–7 mm long, long-acuminate, with awn 6–12 (–15) mm long, cartilaginous, 7–9-nerved, scabrous or scaberulous with rows of minute bristles, glabrous. Basal lemma ovate, 3–4 mm long, acute to obtuse, erose, puberulous; hairs mainly arising in the upper half but very sparse on the lower half, except on the submargins, erect. Palea keels hairy towards the apex.
