Characteristics

Bulbous perennial herbs. Roots fibrous. Leaves several, basal, linear, annual. Scape slender, simple, hollow or solid. Flowers bisexual, 1-5 in a terminal umbel subtended by a thin, boat-shaped spathe. Perianth regular, campanulate, nodding, white and green; corona absent; segments 6, similar, free or shortly united. Stamens 6, free, inserted on a fleshy disc; filaments terete, slender, glabrous; anthers dehiscing by apical pores. Ovary inferior, 3-locular; ovules several per locule; placentation axile; style slender; stigma small. Fruit a capsule, erect. Seeds many, usually black.
