Characteristics

A small rounded shrub to 1.3 m in height, up to 2 m in diam., with a single main stem. Flowering stems densely pubescent 5-7 mm in diam. Leaves broadly cuneate to very broadly obovate, 4-7 cm long, 2-4.5 cm wide; at first covered with a soft indumentum of crisped hairs interspersed with straight hairs, later becoming glabrous; apices incised, with 5-14 reddish teeth. Inflorescences globose, 3 cm in diam., pedunculate; penduncles 1.5-3 cm long; between 3 and 6 inflorescences clustered in leaf axils at top of flowering shoot. Involucral receptacle variable in form, obliquely conic to obovoid, 5-8 mm long, 5 mm wide. Involucral bracts ovate, acuminate at apices, 7-10 mm long, tightly adpressed imbricate, cartilaginous, thickly tomentose, apices minutely crinite. Floral bracts obovate, 7 mm long, 2.5-3 mm wide, apices thickened, mucronate, densely tomentose. Perianth 1.2-1.5 cm long, cylindric, straight in bud, yellow but becoming pink later; inner surfaces of perianth segments becoming deep crimson after anthesis; claws equally recurved subterminally, outer surface sparsely villous; tube up to 8 mm long, glabrous proximally, minutely puberulous distally; limbs lanceolate, 2 mm long, sparsely covered with a few stiff trichomes. Style straight to very slightly incurved, tapering subterminally, 2 cm long. Pollen-presenter obovoid to clavate, 1 mm long, stigmatic groove terminal. Ovary not differentiated from style base; minutely puberulous. Hypogynous scales linear-filiform, acuminate, 3-4 mm long.
