Perianth base remaining tubular; claw comprising 4 lightly fused segments, the 3 adaxial ones remaining attached, but the fourth increasing in length and becoming separated from the adaxial for three quarters of its length but remaining attached at the base; limb comprising 4 segments all separating at anthesis.

Flower-heads solitary or in small clusters at stem apices, subglobose; involucral bracts small, rather lax (in the Flora area), spirally inserted on the peduncle, not surrounding the flower bases; receptacle conical to flat.
Ovary puberulous, scarcely differentiated from the base of the style, with a single pendulous ovule; style (at least in the Flora area) flattened and expanded at the tip to form a conspicuous pollen-presenter.
Small trees or shrubs, sometimes with many stems from a rootstock, sometimes (South Africa) prostrate.
Fruit an ovoid to cylindric nut, glabrous or minutely puberulous.
