Characteristics

Leaves on aerial stem opposite, 10–15 x 3–5 mm., elliptic to narrowly ovate to obovate becoming divided below, sessile, entire to crenate or occasionally obscurely serrate, hirsute beneath particularly upper leaves, glabrous above, with 3–5 parallel nerves, sparsely punctate; lower submerged leaves multipartite, segments capillary.

Flowers sessile, clustered together into short compact terminal spike, each flower subtended by much reduced leaf-like bract, or occasionally solitary-axillary; ebracteolate; occasionally cleistogamous flowers present on submerged stems.
Stems up to 1 m. long, glabrous and leaflets in extreme submerged part, becoming densely white villous above then glabrous on emergence.
Corolla about 14 mm. long, yellow, shortly pilose without, denser within; adaxial lip shallowly bilobed, abaxial lip with entire lobes.
Stamens with posterior filaments about 2 mm. long, anthers 4.5 mm. long, all glabrous; anthers contiguous.
Calyx about 3.5 mm. long, glabrous, not striate at maturity; lobes 1.5 mm. long, ovate, sub-obtuse.
Weak-stemmed aquatic herb 2-4 ft. long, leafless in the lower part
Capsule 3 x 2 mm., compressed broad-ellipsoid, brown.
