Leaves: upper shortly petiolate or sessile, 6–18 x 3.5–8 mm., opposite, clustered at or towards end of stem, floating, obovate to obovate-oblong, obtuse, entire, slightly sheathing at base, somewhat fleshy, green to reddish-purple when living; lower usually sessile, c. 2–3(6) x 1 mm., ovate.
Aquatic, glabrous, annual; stems 6–12(25) cm. long, simple or branched below, erect, naked below upper leaves except occasionally with remote pairs of much smaller cauline leaves present, rooting at or near base.
Aquatic herb, up to 500 mm tall. Leaves crowded at or near top of stem, rotund or obovate, rounded at apex. Stamens 2, staminodes 2. Flowers axillary, sub-terminal, white with maroon spots.
Fertile stamens two, filaments c. 2.5 mm. long; staminodes two, c. 1.25 mm. long, simple, apically incurved, minutely papillose, antero-lateral ridge up to 1.5 mm. long, obscure.
Corolla white with purplish markings to mauve or magenta, up to 14 mm. long, upper lip c. 4–5 mm. long, entire, broadly ovate, lower lip c. 8 mm. long, deeply trilobed.
Calyx 2–2.5 mm. long, deeply divided almost to base, glabrous; lobes 1.75–2.25 mm. long, 0.8–1 mm. wide, broadly oblong or ovate, obtuse.
Capsule up to 4 x 2.75–3 mm., broadly cylindric-ovoid, style persistent in fruit.
Flowers axillary, subterminal, pedicellate.
Pedicels 4–10(15) mm. long.
