Collected by W.N. Brewster from Hengwha in the Fukien province, China, between 1903 and 1906. Introd. into Hawaii in 1907 as PI 21204. Brewster was suggested to be the same as the Chinese variety Chen-tze or Chen Family Purple. A midseason variety available in June-July. Origin: Tree: large, vigorous, upright with sharp crotches. Leaves: dark green, with six leaflets. Requires a distinctive cold period for flower initiation. Fruit: large, average 45 fruit/kg, conical or wedge-shaped, bright purplish-red, protuberance short and sharp-pointed, endocarp distinctly pink in color. Flesh: soft, slightly fragrant, juicy, sweet when full-ripe; edible portion 74%. Seeds: 30% to 50% shriveled.
