Characteristics

Shrub to 3 m tall, flowering seasonal shoots arising directly from lignotuber, glabrescent. Leaves simple, entire to coarsely pungent-serrate or-dentate; petiole to 1.5 cm long; lamina ovate to elliptic, sometimes narrowly so, 10-18 cm long, 2.5-5.5 cm wide, cuneate to attenuate at base, rounded to acuminate at apex, pungent, glabrous except for ferruginous hairs on midrib below; venation conspicuous and raised above. Conflorescence terminal, solitary or aggregated, to 20 cm long, usually greatly exceeding leaves; peduncle and pedicel glabrous to densely ferruginous-hairy; pedicel 8-11 (-13) mm long. Perianth 8-10 mm long, white or cream to yellow, glabrous or ferruginous-hairy externally. Gynophore 8-11 (-13) mm long. Style 4-5 (-6) mm long. Follicle 2.5-4 cm long, dark brown-grey. Seeds c. 5 mm long; wing to 18 mm long.
