Characteristics

Trees; branches with very obvious leaf-scars. Leaves tufted at tips of branches, simple, petiolate, entire; secondary veins numerous; stipules entire. Flowers in terminal panicles. Calyx lobes 5, imbricate in bud, persistent. Corolla contorted in bud; petals 5.. Stamens numerous in 3–5 whorls; anthers dehiscing by 2 apical pores. Ovary sessile, of 2 carpels, 1-locular with basal placentation, the ovules in 2 rows, erect, anatropous; style scarcely distinct from ovary; stigmas 2, divergent. Achenes subwoody, surrounded by calyx with outer sepals accrescent and wing-like. Seeds without endosperm.
