Short-lived perennial, developing numerous prostrate radiating branches from the top of an undivided taproot, flowering from first year of growth, ultimately (at least in South Africa) rootstock sometimes branched; lower branches numerous, prostrate, forming mats, 5–20 cm long, slender, pilose.

Leaves 3-foliolate; leaflets 4–12 × 2–7 mm, elliptic-obovate, apiculate, sparsely pilose to glabrous above, pilose beneath; petiole ± as long as the leaflets or a little shorter; stipules single at a node, 2–10 mm long, linear-elliptic to oblanceolate.
Standard bright yellow, shorter than or equalling the keel, narrowly elliptic-obovate, extensively pubescent outside; wings distinctly shorter than the keel; keel 8–10 mm long, narrow with a blunt reddish-purple tip, extensively pubescent.
Flowers 1–3, leaf-opposed; bracts 1–2 mm long, ± as long as the pedicel, linear; bracteoles absent.
Calyx 4–6 mm long, pilose; upper and lateral lobes joined slightly higher, 3–4 mm long, subulate.
Pods 6–8 × 2.5–3 mm, narrowly oblong-obovate, pubescent, c. 8-seeded.
