Characteristics

Erect rather bushy annual or short-lived perennial, up to 1 m. or so.. Stem finely pubescent, usually with crisped and spreading hairs.. Leaves 7–9-foliolate; leaflets oblanceolate-cuneate to narrowly oblong-elliptic, 30–50 mm. long, 5–12 mm. wide, bluntly pointed, pubescent on both surfaces; petiole 35–80 mm. long.. Stipules linear-subulate, 3–8 mm. long.. Racemes 10–35 cm. long, with many ± verticillate flowers; bracts lanceolate-caudate to narrowly elliptic-acuminate, 6–8 mm. long; pedicels 2–4 mm. long.. Calyx 7–9 mm. long, tomentose; upper lip bifid; lower lip almost entire to minutely 3-fid.. Standard suborbicular, white or blue-purple with a white pink-marked median zone, glabrous except sometimes for a few hairs apically outside; wings exceeding keel; keel abruptly rounded, produced into a sharp beak, 10–12 mm. long.. Pod oblong, shortly beaked, 3·5–4 cm. long, 1–1·3 cm. wide, densely pilose, with fairly thin valves impressed between the 4–6 seeds.. Seeds oblong-elliptic, more curved along the chalaza side, 6× 4× 2 mm., smooth, pale brown mottled darker and with a dark line on either side.
