Characteristics

Tree to 7 (–15) m high, evergreen. Branches erect. Branchlets initially appressed pubescent, glabrescent. Leaves opposite or subopposite, sometimes obovate, not crowded; lamina broadly elliptic or orbicular, 1.5–4 (–6) cm long, 1–3 cm wide, cuneate or shortly attenuate at base, retuse, rarely obtuse, usually minutely mucronate at apex, discolorous, initially appressed pubescent, glabrescent; petiole 4–8 mm long, appressed pubescent, glabrescent. Inflorescence usually 2-flowered; peduncles usually 0.5–0.8 cm long, appressed pubescent; bracts orbicular, 2–3 mm long, deciduous. Flowers on pedicels c. 4 mm long. Calyx tube glabrous; lobes pubescent, c. 1 cm long with 2 obovate; bracteoles as long as calyx, glabrous. Petals obovate, shortly acuminate, 5–7 mm long, pubescent. Staminal filaments c. 6 mm long. Disc villous. Style glabrous. Fruit: calyx lobes 1.6–2.5 cm long; bracteoles obovate, as long as calyx, 0.6–1.2 cm wide, glabrous, straw-coloured/yellowish.
