Characteristics

Small trees or shrubs. Leaves sessile or almost so, crowded and spirally arranged, or petiolate, opposite and distant, without domatia. Flowers 5-merous, in pairs on axillary peduncles, bisexual. Calyx produced into a tube above the ovary, bearing 2 persistent adnate bracteoles. Petals attached at base of calyx lobes, deciduous. Stamens 10. Disc narrow, cupular. Style free, exserted, persistent. Ovules 6–12. Fruit a pseudocarp, dry, conical or funnel-shaped, terminating in enlarged calyx lobes, with 2 enlarged wing-like bracteoles.
