Characteristics

Shrub or tree to 6 (–15) m high. Branches divaricate. Branchlets mostly short, pubescent. Leaves spirally arranged, usually densely crowded; lamina lanceolate to rectangular, (3–) 5–8 (–11) mm long, 1–2.5 (–4) mm wide, attenuate at base, obtuse, minutely mucronate at apex, concolorous, densely silvery pubescent; petiole absent or less than 2 mm long, pubescent. Inflorescence of paired flowers; peduncles c. 3 mm long, pubescent; bracts broadly ovate, 2–4 mm long, deciduous. Flowers ± sessile on pedicels to 1 mm long. Calyx 1–1.5 cm long, villous; bracteoles 5–10 mm long, villous. Petals elliptic, acute, 6–8 mm long, cream, pink or red, villous. Staminal filaments 1.5–2.5 cm long. Disc villous. Style thinly villous at base. Fruit: calyx lobes 2.2–2.5 cm long; bracteoles broadly elliptic or orbicular, 1–2 cm long, 1.5–2 cm wide, thinly villous, glabrescent, initially red, bleaching straw yellow.

Environment

Grows in shallow soil in low woodland or vine thicket. Often grows on rocky areas in open forest but also found in monsoon forest and vine thickets particularly on limestone in the Chillagoe area (Zich et al. 2020).
