Characteristics

Plants acaulescent; stem 10-17 cm diam.; 2-6 leaves in crown. Leaves 30-80 cm long, moderately keeled, with 50-90 pinnae, pale green, dull to semi-glossy; petiole 6-14 cm long, 10-14 mm wide at lowest pinna; rachis strongly spirally twisted. Basal pinnae not reducing to spines. Median pinnae simple, 20-30 cm long, 9-14 mm wide, strongly discolorous; margins flat; apex dentate, not spinescent. Pollen cones fusiform, 12-15 cm long, 4-5 cm diam.; microsporophyll lamina 12-18 mm long, 10-12 mm wide; apical spine 0-8 mm long. Seed cones ovoid, 12-18 cm long, 7-9 cm diam.; megasporophyll with an expanded, peltate apex 25-35 mm wide and 14-18 mm long; apical spine 0-30 mm long. Seeds ovoid, 22-26 mm long, 18-22 mm wide; sarcotesta red.
