Characteristics

Plants acaulescent, rarely caulescent; stem 0-0.3 m tall, 20-30 cm diam.; 15-20 leaves in crown. Leaves 100-150 cm long, flat (not keeled) in section, with (48-) 52-58 (-66) pinnae, mid-green, semi-glossy to highly glossy; petiole 40-50 cm long, 4-5 mm wide at lowest pinna. Basal pinnae not reducing to spines. Median pinnae simple, 28-32 cm long, 4.5-6 mm wide, strongly discolorous; margins flat; apex entire, spinescent. Pollen cones fusiform, 8-15 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm diam.; microsporophyll lamina 14-16 mm long, 10-13 mm wide; apical spine 1-20 mm long (distally 15-20 mm). Seed cones narrowly ovoid, 13-14 cm long, 6-8 cm diam.; megasporophyll with an expanded, peltate apex 28-35 mm wide and 15-20 mm long; apical spine 25-62 mm long. Seeds oblong-ovoid, 20-23 mm long, 15-16 mm wide; sarcotesta orange to orange-red.
