Characteristics

Plants acaulescent; stem 10-20 cm diam.; 1-5 leaves in crown. Leaves 40-75 cm long, moderately keeled, with 80-120 pinnae, dark green to grey-green, dull to semi-glossy; petiole 10-25 cm long, 6-10 mm wide at lowest pinna; rachis strongly spirally twisted. Basal pinnae not reducing to spines. Median pinnae simple, 6-20 cm long, 4-10 mm wide, strongly discolorous; margins flat or slightly incurved; apex entire to dentate, not spinescent. Pollen cones fusiform, 10-24 cm long, 3.5-5 cm diam.; microsporophyll lamina 15-25 mm long, 10-17 mm wide; apical spine 0-5 mm long. Seed cones ovoid, 10-14 cm long, 5-8 cm diam.; megasporophyll with an expanded, peltate apex 20-30 mm wide and 10-13 mm long; apical spine 3-20 mm long. Seeds ovoid, 18-25 mm long, 15-22 mm wide; sarcotesta red.
