Characteristics

Evergreen shrub up to 3.5 m. tall with ascending and spreading branches, glabrous except for the margin of the sepals.. Twigs grey, often arising at right angles.. Leaves disposed along the twigs in fascicles, petiolate, simple; blade obovate-oblong to elliptic, 7–30 mm. long, 4 mm. wide, apically narrowed to an acute point, or truncately rounded and sometimes emarginate, mucronate, shiny rather dark green, with the midrib prominent beneath.. Inflorescence a short corymbose raceme or the flowers 1–2 in the axils of the clustered leaves; pedicels 1.5–2.5 mm. long.. Sepals 11–12 mm. long, acute, marginally puberulent; receptacle 3–4 mm. long, brown; disk with a very short free rim.. Petals 1.8–3 mm. long.. Stamens 17–20, 1–2 cm. long.. Ovary narrowly cylindrical, glabrous.. Fruits cylindrical, ± 4 cm. long, markedly torulose, green.

Leaves alternate or in fascicles on abbreviated side shoots, simple; lamina 0.7–3.7 x 0.25–0.7 cm., very narrowly elliptic or narrowly oblanceolate, apex rounded or subacute, mucronulate, base very narrowly rounded or cuneate, glabrous on both sides, upper surface smooth and rather polished, dull below; nerves in 5–6 pairs, inconspicuous above, slightly raised below; petioles up to 2 mm. long, channelled above and puberulous along the sides of the furrow.
Ovary on a gynophore up to 1 .6 cm. long, narrowly oblong; ovules c. 20 on 2 placentas which carry a single row of ovules on each placenta not two rows as is usual in this genus; style up to 1 mm. long; stigma subcapitate.
Receptacle 3.5–5.0 mm. long, 2.5–3 mm. wide at the mouth, narrowly funnel-shaped, glabrous, with a slightly thickened very slightly dentate disk at the inner margin.
Flowers solitary or occasionally in pairs on the abbreviated side shoots; pedicels up to 3 cm. long, glabrous, slender; bracts up to 1 mm. long, trifid, subulate.
Sepals 1.2–1.4 x 0.5 cm., oblong-lanceolate, apex apiculate or acuminate, glabrous on both sides, margins puberulous.
A straggling branched shrub up to 4 m. tall; branches glabrous, becoming densely lenticelled; bark pale grey.
Fruit c. 4 cm. long, cylindric, somewhat torulose, smooth, abruptly narrowed at the apex.
Stamens 15–20; filaments c. 2 cm. long; anthers 3 x 1 mm., narrowly oblong.
Petals 2 x 1 mm., oblong, blunt at the apex, or absent.
