Characteristics

Erect perennials, arising from short rhizomes. Leaf-blades linear-lanceolate to narrowly ovate, the nerves running parallel to midrib and connected by short transverse veins, usually narrowed into a false petiole. Panicle terminal, erect, narrow. Spikelets bisexual, 3-flowered, narrowly lanceolate, somewhat laterally compressed, acuminate, awnless, falling entire from the pedicel; glumes persistent, vestigial; both lower florets represented only by narrow sterile lemmas. Upper floret hermaphrodite; lemma firmly membranous or chartaceous, at length subcoriaceous, 5-nerved, clasping the palea, separated from the sterile lemmas by a thickened internode; palea similar, 3-nerved; stamens 6; stigmas 2.
