Characteristics

Tree, 3-10 m high. Leaves crowded at tips of branches, elliptic to ovate, apex retuse, margins undulate to repand; stipules caducous or absent. Flowers axillary in axils of leaves, trimerous, creamy white. Sepals 6, in 2 whorls, often broad. Corolla 6(8)-lobed, each lobe with 2 dorsal appendages. Stamens 6 arising from throat of corolla tube; filaments usually longer than short anthers. Ovary 6-16-locular; ovules ventrally or basiventrally attached. Flowering time June-Aug. Fruit a 1-or 2-seeded berry, up to 30 x 20 mm, orange. Seeds laterally flattened; testa hard, scar conspicuous.
