Spikelets in pairs at the nodes of a thickened, readily disarticulating rachis, one sessile and perfect, the other pedicellate and sterile, the sessile spikelet appressed to the rachis, forming a subcylindrical raceme; first glume of sessile spikelet in-durate, obtuse, winged, smooth or variously wrinkled or pitted; sterile lemma, fertile lemma and palea hyaline, the fertile lemma awnless; pedicellate spikelet smaller and less indurate than the sessile, sterile.
