Mélique ciliée (fr)

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Melica

Characteristics

Plants caespitose. Culms 12–80 cm high, unbranched above. Leaves: ligule 2–6 mm long, subacute to somewhat acuminate; blade 4–20 cm long, 0.5–1.5 mm wide, adaxially scabrous or pubescent. Panicles contracted, 1–12 cm long. Spikelets cuneate, 5.5–8.5 mm long, with 1 bisexual floret subtending a shorter club-shaped rudiment of 1–3 sterile florets; pedicel minutely scabrous or puberulous; rachilla glabrous. Glumes ovate, acute; lower glume 5.5–7 mm long, muticous, 3 or 5-nerved; upper glume 6–8.5 mm long, muticous or tapering to a short straight awn, 5-nerved. Bisexual floret: lemma lanceolate, 6–7.5 mm long, entire, shortly papillose, prominently ciliate except in upper 1/4 to 1/10; palea slightly shorter than lemma, subacute, with keels scabrid or shortly hairy, with intercostal regions minutely rough; anthers 1.2–1.7 mm long. Sterile florets oblong to globoid. Caryopsis slightly dorsiventrally compressed.
More
Perennial, densely tufted, shortly rhizomatous. Culms 20–80 cm tall, 1–2 mm in diam. Leaf sheaths scabrid with upwardly directed teeth; leaf blades usually rolled, 6–10 cm × 1–4 mm, abaxial (outer) surface smooth or scabrid; ligule 1–4 mm. Panicle spikelike, 2.5–8 cm, dense or rather lax, strongly to indistinctly 1-sided, sometimes lobed below, main axis usually visible. Spikelets 4–8 mm, green or purplish, fertile floret 1, terminal sterile lemmas gathered into globular cluster; glumes ovate, papery, 5-veined, lower glume 3/4–4/5 length of upper, upper glume as long as spikelet, both acute; lemma lanceolate, 2.5–3.2 mm, granular-scaberulous, 7–9-veined, densely ciliate along marginal veins with 2–3 mm hairs, apex acute; palea keels ciliolate. Anthers 0.8–1.5 mm. Fl. May–Jul. 2n = 18.
