Melinis macrochaeta Stapf & C.E.Hubb.

Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Melinis

Characteristics

Annual; culms 25–120 cm. high, erect or ascending, often rooting at the lower nodes.. Leaf-blades flat, 5–20 cm. long, 4–14 mm. wide, softly pilose (but not so sticky as M. minutiflora).. Panicle narrowly oblong, 5–25 cm. long, dense; pedicels scaberulous, mostly glabrous but rarely with a few long hairs.. Spikelets oblong, 1.5–2 mm. long, glabrous or pubescent; lower glume reduced to an obscure rim; upper glume straight on the back, 7-nerved, bilobed with denticulate lobes; lower floret barren, without a palea, the lemma 3(–5)-nerved, acutely bilobed for 1/4 its length, with a slender awn 5–20 mm. long; upper lemma shorter than the palea.
More
A tufted annual, sometimes a short-lived perennial, 500-1 000 mm high; culm with less than 10 nodes, often rooting at lower nodes. Leaf blade 50-150 x 5-10 mm. Inflorescence narrowly ovate; pedicel glabrous, occasionally sparsely hairy, scaberulous. Spikelet 1.5-2.0 x 0.5 mm, narrowly oblong, glabrous or pubescent; lower glume reduced to a scale up to 0.1 mm long; upper glume with dentate lobes, 7-nerved, awnless or mucronate; internode absent; upper glume and lower lemma finely nerved, not grooved; lower lemma lobed, 3-5 nerved, awn (5-)8-20 mm long; lower palea absent; anthers 0.8-1.2 mm long.
Mainly annual, tufted, up to 1 m high. Leaf blades 50-150 mm long, 5-10 mm wide. Culms often with stilt roots from lower nodes. Spikelets 1.5-2.0 mm long, 0.5 mm wide; lower glume reduced to a scale; upper glume 7-nerved, awnless and not grooved; female-fertile (upper) lemma with 3-5 nerves, awn (5-)8-20 mm long.
Inferior glume an obscure rim up to 0.1 mm. long, inserted close to the superior; superior glume 7-nerved, delicately membranous, bilobed, the lobes irregularly dentate, awnless or mucronate.
Inferior floret barren without a palea, its lemma 3–5-nerved, acutely bilobed, equalling the superior glume but narrower and with an awn (5)8–20 mm. long.
Culms (35)50–100(150) cm. high, geniculately ascending and often rooting at the lower nodes.
Annual, erect or ascending, up to 1·2 m. high, often with stilt roots from the lower nodes
Leaf laminae (3)5–15(20) cm. long, (3)5–10(13) mm. wide, flat, thin, softly pilose.
Pedicels glabrous, rarely with a few long hairs towards the apex, scabrous.
Leaves less sticky and odorous than M. minutiflora.
Spikelets 1.5–2 mm. long, narrowly oblong.
Panicle 10–25 cm. long, narrowly ovate.
Tufted annual to short-lived perennial.
